The big story in the news today is about a teacher getting fired for being pregnant and unmarried.
Some of you may be leaping from your chair in anger, exclaiming “what?!? What an injustice!” I probably would be too, except…
She’s a catholic school teacher, and she signed a contract stating she’d abide by catholic ideals. I would assume that she’d know what those tenants were, as I do and I’m far from a devout anything.
Now she’s outraged, and has brought the NYCLU into the mess. While I generally have no problems with the NYCLU or ACLU, I do think they may be barking up the wrong tree. If it were a public school, I’d agree that it was wrong and discriminating. However it’s not and I don’t.
I don’t agree with much of the Catholic church, but I’m siding with them on this one. Catholic schools are private institutions and subsequently have the right to fire employees for reasons that would otherwise not be allowed in a public venue. Oh yeah and she signed a contract!
So right now she’s acting as a substitute teacher in NYC and complaining about the conditions in the schools. I would think she’d at least be happy she can’t be fired.
